![]() One can always hypothesize on how great it would have been to have everybody working under one roof, but the whole point of opensource communities is that they are often made and broken on the wills/egos/personalities of one or two key developers, and this is what happened here several years ago. Each has its own philosophy linked to a different choice of licence for the source code and different priorities for development and system integration which have led to two similar, but different products. The two projects have the same origins, at least in the initial source code. What is the difference? I thought NeoOffice was the Mac version of OpenOffice. Markteach wrote:I've been using for a few years now on my Windows machines. Please note Eric, that I am not taking sides here, but your own personal feelings with regard to past "bad blood" between the two projects do tend to make you appear rather less than objective.Īlex (who has had the same pseudo since the OOo project was born) Thurgood At least we ought to remain factual, even if we can't remain gentlemanly. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" "People in glass houses don't throw stones" Is such behaviour from the OOo community also unacceptable in your opinion ? ![]() One would hope, and I certainly believe that it is so from the exchanges I see on the OOo trademark discussion list, that the OOo project sends similar requests to people who infringe on the use of the trademark and trade dress. It might not be, but the message you point to isn't an infringement suit, it is a cease and desist request, based not only on copyright, but also on trademark law. This is not the first time, and this is unacceptable. There may be other advantages of OOo for Mac/X11 that I'm not familiar with. The NeoOffice developers will not be porting OOo 2.3 or 2.4 to Mac instead they will soon start working on porting OOo 3.0. OOo is currently at 2.4 Neo is at 2.2.3, based on 2.2.1. The downside to NeoOffice is that it is always a version or more behind. The developers are currently working on making a Media Browser available in NeoOffice. Supoort for Quicktime video and audio (new)Ī comparison chart can be foun on the neowiki. this is from the odf converter project the filters are still somewhat experimental.Įxperimental VBA support (from the OOo build project) I think this is limited to VBA in Calc right now.Ībility to access the Mac Address Book (this may be in OOo 2.4, too if not it should be part of OOo 3.0) The NeoOffice developers have decided to include several extras that are not available in the standard OOo version. It uses the native file picker and print dialogs, etc. It has been out of beta for some time and is stable enough for serious work. It is a "native" application which does not require X11. NeoOffice is an independent port/fork of for the Mac. It is currently at an alpha stage available for testing, but without all the features, and clearly labeled as not for production work. There is also an Aqua Mac port in progress that will run natively on the Mac without X11. This version of is unable to recognize the Java Runtime Enviroment (JRE) available in Leopard, so neither the wizards nor the Base Module will work on Leopard-unless OOo 2.4 fixed that problem, which it may have. This means installing X11 and living with a rather un-Mac like environment. has a version for Mac that uses the X11 windowing system to allow it to run on a Mac. Note that I write this as someone who has used NeoOffice but never.
